Drone perspective: Dutch aviation regulations explained

In 2012, I purchased my first drone. It was an octocopter with eight motors and could fly for approximately 11 minutes while carrying my full-frame DSLR camera. This combination weighed over four kilograms and, due to its size, prompted me to buy a small van so everything could be transported properly and securely.

Technology and regulations

Nearly six years later, drone technology has developed significantly. Drones have become smaller, more affordable, and far more user-friendly. Unlike in 2012, the legal framework for commercieel vliegen met drones has now become much clearer.

Certification, registration, insurance, and operational exemption

To operate commercially with drones in Europe, I must be fully familiar with aviation regulations, specifically those concerning small unmanned aircraft. I obtained my ROC Light theoretical certificate for this purpose. My drone is registered with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management through the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT). With certification and registration in place, I arranged liability insurance to cover potential incidents.

Since this summer, I have received a formal business exemption from the Dutch authorities, allowing me to offer commercial drone flights for aerial photography and video within Dutch regulations.

Dutch drone regulations

Dutch aviation regulations are in the process of being harmonized within the European Union to establish unified rules. At present, however, it is not permitted to fly higher than 50 meters. Flying above people or continuous urban areas is also prohibited. There are several additional operational restrictions for drone flights in the Netherlands. De Rijksoverheid actively communicates where drone flights are permitted and where they are restricted.

Commercial drone operations

Beyond the enjoyment of flying, drones enable unique perspectives for photography and provide stable, smooth video footage. Everything looks different from above. I am happy to inform you about the possibilities of working with drone imagery.

Curious about drone possibilities?

Would you like to capture your project or location from above? With professional drone photography and video — fully compliant with regulations — I add perspective and impact to your visual presentation. Feel free to get in touch to discuss your project.
