For an editorial on the operations of the German foundation engineering company Bauer, I photographed on the construction site in Rozenburg. Here, impressive heavy machinery is being used to build the new tunnel beneath the Nieuwe Waterweg, connecting the A20 and A15 motorways.
Because large cruise ships and container vessels pass through this waterway, the tunnel must be constructed at significant depth. To prevent the tunnel from floating on groundwater once completed, Bauer drills holes up to 60 meters deep using specialized machinery. This enables the foundation engineering company to anchor the tunnel securely, ensuring that everything remains firmly in place.
Walking around this site alone is a story in itself. Dressed in an orange overall, wearing a hard hat and safety boots, I found myself on an immense sandy expanse. All around me, activity was constant, and I had the feeling that I didn’t have enough eyes to take it all in. Massive machines at work — and the realization that two times six traffic lanes represent an enormous surface area.
On the drive home, I took a moment to let it all sink in. Here, I’m sharing a selection of photographs for the editorial.
