Photography of construction work

Art Depot Rotterdam

In January 2020, I photographed the construction work on site at the art depot in Rotterdam. Last week, the design was awarded the Glasaward 2021.

Exceptional architecture

More than 151,000 artworks are stored inside the art depot. For that reason alone, the depot is well worth a visit. Long before its opening, however, the construction of the depot had already caught my attention because of its remarkable design. Standing in front of the building, you can see the skyline of Rotterdam reflected in its façade. The depot was designed by architect Winy Maas of MVRDV,

with Sorba Projects responsible for the technical development and installation of the façade.

A publicly accessible art depot

Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen is the world’s first publicly accessible art depot and is located in Museumpark in Rotterdam. Visitors experience the result of 172 years of collecting, organised and stored across fourteen depot spaces with five different climate zones. In addition to the artworks themselves, all activities involved in managing and maintaining the collection are on display.

Visit the depot.

Glas Award

The Glas Award is a long-established and prestigious industry prize within the flat glass sector, focusing on the application of flat glass in interior and/or exterior architecture.
