The Kompastoren in Mijdrecht is a unique location featuring modern workspaces and meeting facilities. The former water tower was built in 1937 and supplied clean drinking water to Mijdrecht, Wilnis, and Vinkeveen for nearly 70 years. Today, a diverse group of entrepreneurs has taken up residence there. Here, you can view a selection of photographs documenting the ten-year journey of its redevelopment and adaptive reuse.
Between 2008 and 2022, the adaptive reuse of the Kompastoren was completed. Not only did the legal and regulatory process present challenges—the actual transformation of the 41-metre-high tower came with its own technical and construction-related complexities.
The former water tower has been fitted with large new window sections. On the eastern side of the tower, substantial portions of the exterior wall were cut away, allowing generous daylight to enter the building today.
To accommodate creative entrepreneurs, new floors were added inside the Kompastoren. Several businesses are now permanently based in the former water tower. In addition, spaces can be rented by the half-day for receptions, celebrations, creative sessions, workshops, and inspiring presentations—where you are quite literally and figuratively “among the clouds.”
To bring guests and tenants to their elevated workspaces, an entirely new structure was built on the south side of the tower. This houses both the stairwell and a full elevator installation. For those who prefer the stairs, informative signs have been placed in the stairwell indicating height levels or the remaining number of steps up or down.
On the ground floor, you’ll find the Kompas Café. This is where guests are welcomed and where there’s space to enjoy a good cup of coffee.
For marketing and rental purposes, I created a virtual tour of the Kompastoren. At several points, you can step back in time to see the transformation the tower has undergone. View the virtual tour via https://kijkvirtueel.nl/kompastoren/
It’s my passion to photograph the work of skilled professionals in the right way. Project or interior photography can be used on your website or social media, but they are even more effective as references during (introductory) client conversations. Show what you’re proud of, so others understand why they should work with you.
