Last week, I photographed this distinctive project for a wooden flooring supplier. In this home on the Prinsengracht, with a far-from-standard layout, a hand-scraped plank floor was installed. The choice of this material perfectly complements the character of the space, resulting in a unique and authentic outcome.
Installing a wooden floor is a craft. The direction in which the planks are laid has a strong influence on how a space is perceived. A lengthwise layout, for example, can visually extend a room and create calm by minimizing visible seams or level differences.
In narrow, elongated spaces, a floor laid across the width can break up the space and add a more playful effect.
A consistent laying pattern across an entire level creates a sense of unity—something that becomes immediately noticeable when opening a door and seeing the pattern continue seamlessly from room to room.
In this project, that continuity was maintained despite level differences between spaces. Through craftsmanship, these transitions were subtly resolved, preserving a strong and cohesive visual result.
This photo series shows how product and craftsmanship come together. Would you like your project professionally documented for marketing or portfolio purposes? Get in touch—I’d be happy to think along with you.
