This page provides an overview of what’s currently occupying my mind: March 3, 2026
For several years now, in addition to photography, I have been offering film production services. This includes aftermovies and corporate films. Yet most people still know me as Kevin the photographer—and if you ask a bit further, something to do with real estate agents. That has long since stopped being my only business activity. I would like the people around me to have an accurate impression of my work, without constantly bothering them about it. At the moment, I am restructuring my website to place more emphasis on my film work. At the same time, I try to regularly write more personal posts about thoughts and ideas I’m exploring. In doing so, I hope others will occasionally visit my website and find more there than just my completed projects.
What I enjoy most is being outdoors and experiencing nature while moving. I like riding my low-maintenance bicycle Schindelhauer Friedrich, but I enjoy walking just as much. It helps that there is always someone willing to join me: our dog, Rox. When I’m outside, the environment stimulates my inspiration—sounds, scents, and things I observe. This works well for both work-related and personal thoughts. When I want more intensive exercise for my fitness, I often go to Zwembad De Wel in Nieuwkoop. I also recently completed my first 12.5-kilometer run. That brings a very different feeling: pure and raw, instead of burning energy in a tank of chlorinated water.
I think I’m currently in a bit of a retro phase. I enjoy listening to music, and lately quite often on my 20-year-old iPod. I also occasionally play a computer game: at the moment, Donkey Kong Country Returns (2010) on the Nintendo Wii U. It had been sitting on the shelf and is great fun to revisit. It was originally released for the Nintendo Wii, but can also be played on the Wii U. It’s quite funny—you have to shake the controller like crazy to make bananas pop out of the ground.
It’s March ’26. The first beautiful spring days have arrived, and a typically relaxing activity is tidying up our front and back garden. As I look outside now, I see that my lawn has started growing again and that the two small trees really need their old branches trimmed. Or rather—my neighbor pruned his tree, and that’s often my cue. To be continued.
In this period, geopolitical unrest fills the daily news cycle. I am very deliberate in how I consume news. I’m not burying my head in the sand, but I actively limit my news intake. I find the developments highly interesting, yet at the same time there is very little I can do about the rapid succession of events. Occasionally I cycle to the local library. They have newspapers and magazines there, and browsing through them offers a different form of information curation than scrolling through my bookmarks on my computer or tablet.
Since Russia’s aggression toward Ukraine, I have become interested in Russia’s motives and those of Vladimir Putin. This book was recommended to me to learn more about the Cold War. It describes in great detail a wide range of events between 1945 and 1991 and provides background on why we need to remain alert regarding the conflict in Ukraine.
