In a climbing harness 50 metres up, or with a waterproof camera in a 200-square-metre underground reservoir: I photographed former water towers, pump houses and reservoirs across four provinces. The buildings are awaiting adaptive reuse, or already transformed.
For developers, architects and municipalities I photograph empty or transformed industrial heritage. Often buildings with a specific industrial function that lost their original use — drinking-water towers, pump houses, reservoirs — now waiting on a sale or a new purpose.
Over the years I photographed water towers in Pateer, Lauwershof, Overvecht, Lopik, Woerden, Bilthoven, Harderwijk and Culemborg, plus the pump house in Munnekeburen, the drinking-water reservoir in Kloosterhaar and the Lippenhuizen tower. Spread across the provinces of Utrecht, Gelderland, Friesland and beyond.
In Kloosterhaar I recently photographed an underground reservoir of more than 200 square metres, up for sale and awaiting a new purpose. From above the site is unremarkable; from below it becomes an industrial space that — with a few roof windows and a clear sky — already feels habitable.
For this type of work, photography is more than documentation. Long exposures, climbing gear, waterproof housings — the technique shapes the image, and the image supports the reuse story for buyers and municipalities.
For developers and architects I capture buildings that aren't ready yet, and buildings that just became ready.
